Italy’s wildest mountains, with bears and wolves an hour and a half from Rome.

A third of Abruzzo is national park, and it holds the only brown bears and the largest wolf population in the Apennines. The Gran Sasso rises to 2,912 metres above a high plain that looks like the steppe, Rocca Calascio stands on a ridge with nothing around it, and the Majella is walked hut to hut. On the coast the trabocchi, fishing platforms on stilts, reach out over the Adriatic, several of them now serving dinner where the nets used to hang.
