Aeolian Islands

Seven volcanic islands off Sicily, one of them erupting several times an hour.

Stromboli has been in mild eruption for at least two thousand years and throws glowing rock into the dark on a rhythm you can almost set a watch by; guided walks go up in the late afternoon to watch it from above. Vulcano has sulphur fumaroles and a black beach, Salina is the green one with caper terraces and Malvasia, and Panarea is where the yachts anchor. Nothing here is done by car — the islands are joined by hydrofoil, and that sets the pace.
