Åland

A Swedish-speaking archipelago of six thousand islands between Finland and Sweden, best seen by bike and ferry.

Åland is autonomous, demilitarised and Swedish-speaking, and it works as a cycling holiday better than almost anywhere: flat roads, short hops on free inter-island ferries, and red wooden houses on granite. Mariehamn has the four-masted barque Pommern in its harbour and a maritime museum to match, Kastelholm castle sits inland, and the outer islands of Kökar and Kumlinge are where the archipelago thins out to rock and sea. Summer is short, bright and busy; everything else is very quiet.
