Almaty is Kazakhstan’s leafy former capital, a city of parks, bazaars and Soviet modernism with the snow peaks of the Tian Shan rising straight behind it — the cable car and the Medeu valley reach the mountains in half an hour. East of it, the Kolsai lakes lie in spruce forest above the village of Saty, and the red Charyn canyon cuts through the steppe on the way.
