A slow river for canoes, limestone rocks, Roman forts and a monastery brewery in a gorge.
The Altmühl is one of Germany’s slowest rivers, made for a canoe, and its valley is lined with juniper heaths, limestone rocks for climbing and fossils in the quarries. Eichstätt is a Baroque bishop’s town; at Kelheim boats run through the Danube gorge to Weltenburg Abbey, which has brewed beer since 1050.
