Nabataean tombs carved into sandstone, a mud-brick old town and desert rocks shaped like elephants.
AlUla is a desert valley of red sandstone in north-western Arabia that opened to visitors only a few years ago. Hegra, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO site, has more than a hundred monumental Nabataean tombs cut into the rocks, sister to Petra; the mud-brick old town of AlUla has been restored with cafés, and the desert around it has the Elephant Rock, canyon hikes, climbing and stargazing.
