High Pyrenean valleys with the range’s largest ski area in winter and empty walking country in summer.

Andorra is three valleys meeting at a duty-free shopping street, and it is worth looking past that street. Grandvalira and Pal-Arinsal give the Pyrenees their biggest linked skiing, and in summer the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley — UNESCO-listed and reachable only on foot — is as quiet as high mountains get in Western Europe. Coma Pedrosa at 2,942 m is a long day’s walk, the thermal baths at Caldea are the wet-weather answer, and fuel, alcohol and electronics cost noticeably less than in either neighbour.
