Fire that burns out of the ground, mud volcanoes and a walled city on the Caspian.
Azerbaijan has natural gas so close to the surface that hillsides burn by themselves — Yanar Dag has been alight for decades, and fire temples were built here long before oil. Nearly half the world’s mud volcanoes bubble on the Absheron peninsula, and Gobustan keeps rock carvings 12,000 years old. Baku sets a walled medieval core against glass towers shaped like flames, and the mountain villages of Xınalıq and Lahıc sit high in the Caucasus with their own languages.
