An island of burial mounds, pearl diving and a tree that stands alone in the desert.
Bahrain was Dilmun, a trading power four thousand years ago, and the evidence is everywhere: tens of thousands of burial mounds, and the fort at Qal’at al-Bahrain built on layer after layer of earlier towns. The pearling trail through Muharraq is World Heritage and runs past merchants’ houses and the divers’ quarters. The Tree of Life has stood alone in the desert for over four centuries with no obvious water. It is small, walkable and far easier to travel than its neighbours.
