Matera’s cave town, a ghost village on a ridge and two coasts within an hour.
Matera was a national embarrassment in the 1950s and is a World Heritage Site now: a town of houses cut into soft rock, emptied by decree and lived in again. The rest of Basilicata is emptier still — Craco abandoned on its ridge after landslides, the sandstone spires of the Dolomiti Lucane with a zip line strung between two villages, and the Pollino massif along the southern border. Maratea gives the region its one stretch of Tyrrhenian cliff coast.
