Western Georgia is green, subtropical and less visited than the east. Kutaisi, one of the world’s oldest cities, has the UNESCO-listed Gelati monastery, the Prometheus cave and canyons for boat trips nearby. Batumi on the Black Sea mixes Belle Époque houses with a skyline of odd towers, a long promenade and a botanical garden that climbs into tea plantations.
