A blunt, energetic city where two rivers meet, with the most committed nightlife in the Balkans.
Belgrade does not prettify itself. Kalemegdan fortress looks out over the Sava joining the Danube, Skadarlija keeps its bohemian cobbles, and brutalist New Belgrade across the water is worth seeing on its own terms. The nightlife is the draw — the splavovi, floating clubs moored along both rivers, run until morning — and Zemun downstream is a quieter Austro-Hungarian counterweight. Eating and drinking cost a fraction of Western Europe.
