The town of a thousand windows, a lived-in castle and the colourful, changing capital.

Berat is called the town of a thousand windows for the Ottoman houses that stack up the hillside below its castle, still lived in, with Byzantine churches inside the walls. Tirana has painted its Communist blocks in bright colours and turned Hoxha’s bunkers into museums, and Krujë, the hilltop town of the national hero Skanderbeg, has a bazaar under its fortress.
