Emptied mountain meadows where wolves, bison and bears came back.
The Bieszczady are the emptiest mountains in Poland, and the reason is grim: the valleys were cleared of their Lemko and Boyko villages after the war and never resettled. What is left are the połoniny, open grassy ridges above the treeline, walked in long traverses with a view into Ukraine and Slovakia. The forest took back the farmland, and with it came wolves, lynx, brown bears and a reintroduced bison herd. Orchards and cemeteries still mark where the villages stood.
