Granite cliffs, round churches and smokehouses, closer to Sweden than to Denmark.
Bornholm lies 150 kilometres east of the rest of Denmark and is made of granite rather than sand, so its north coast has real cliffs and Hammershus, the largest castle ruin in northern Europe, standing on one. Four round white churches from the 1100s were built to be defended as well as prayed in. The island smokes its herring in tall white chimneys and eats it on rye with a raw egg yolk, and a generation of ceramicists and glassblowers has settled here.
