A steppe lake you can wade across, reed beds full of birds, and sweet wine.

The Neusiedler See is a steppe lake barely two metres deep, fringed by the largest reed belt in Europe and shared with Hungary. The shallowness makes it warm, flat and reliably windy, so it is one of the best sailing and surfing waters in Central Europe, and the reeds hold spoonbills, herons and great bustards. Rust has storks nesting on its chimneys. The autumn fog that sits on the lake brings the noble rot that made Burgenland’s sweet wines famous.
