Chestnut ridges, limestone gorges and a shepherding landscape listed by UNESCO.
The Cévennes are granite and schist ridges laid end to end, with the Tarn cutting a gorge 500 metres deep through the limestone next door and the Causses spreading above it as bare grazing plateaux. Transhumance still moves sheep up in June along droveways, and it is that living practice, not the scenery alone, that UNESCO listed. Robert Louis Stevenson walked across with a donkey in 1878 and the route is waymarked; the villages he passed are mostly still small and Protestant.
