Chalk cellars under Épernay, Reims cathedral and the half-timbered old town of Troyes.

In Champagne the wine is made underground: the houses of Épernay store millions of bottles in chalk cellars below the Avenue de Champagne, and small growers in the villages open their doors for tastings. Reims, where France crowned its kings, has one of the great Gothic cathedrals; Troyes, further south, is a town of half-timbered lanes.
