Bog, quartzite mountains and a shattered Atlantic coastline, with Irish still spoken as a first language.
Connemara is the west of Ireland at its least softened: blanket bog and lakes under the Twelve Bens, a coast broken into inlets and islands, and Killary Harbour running inland like a fjord. Kylemore Abbey sits reflected in its lake, Roundstone and Clifden are the working towns, and the Sky Road gives the view everyone photographs. Much of it is Gaeltacht, where Irish is the everyday language, and the weather comes in off the ocean without warning.
