A ninety-kilometre sandbar of migrating dunes, pine forest and fishing villages.
The Curonian Spit is a strip of sand barely a few hundred metres wide in places, with the Baltic on one side and a lagoon on the other. Its dunes once swallowed fourteen villages, and the forest planted to stop them is why anything stands here at all; the Parnidis dune still moves. Nida keeps its blue-and-red fishermen’s cottages and the house Thomas Mann built in 1930. Millions of birds funnel down the spit on migration, and a ringing station has counted them since 1929.
