Where the Danube ends in reeds: three hundred bird species and roads made of water.

After 2,850 kilometres the Danube breaks into three arms and spreads into the largest reed bed on earth. There are no roads worth the name — villages are reached by boat, and the way to see it is in a small one at dawn with an engine off. Three hundred bird species pass through, including Europe’s largest pelican colonies. Sulina was an international port and has a cemetery to prove it; Sfântu Gheorghe has a beach and almost nothing else. The fish soup is the meal.
