Frankincense trees, white beaches, a monsoon that turns the mountains green and camel-lined roads.
Dhofar, in Oman’s far south, catches the edge of the Indian monsoon: in summer the Khareef turns its mountains green, in winter its white beaches are warm and empty. Frankincense has been harvested here since antiquity, and the trees and the ruined trading port of Sumhuram are listed by UNESCO; Salalah has its souq and banana groves, and Mirbat is an old fishing town with a fort.
