Castles above a river made for canoes, cave paintings, truffles and golden stone villages.
The Dordogne valley has more castles than almost anywhere in France, and the best way to see them is from a canoe drifting past Beynac and Castelnaud. The caves of the Vézère hold the Ice Age paintings of Lascaux; Sarlat is a golden-stone medieval town with a market full of walnuts, foie gras and truffles, and Rocamadour clings to its cliff.
