A limestone massif above the deepest river canyon in Europe.

Durmitor rises to 2,523 metres above a plateau of glacial lakes, the Black Lake being the one everyone walks around first. Below it the Tara has cut a canyon 1,300 metres deep — the deepest in Europe and second in the world — crossed by an arched bridge whose builder blew up his own span in 1942 and was shot for it. Rafting the Tara is the summer sport, Žabljak is the base at 1,450 metres, and the whole thing is two hours from the Adriatic.
