Crater lakes, half-timbered towns and castles on basalt, an hour from Cologne.
The Eifel is a volcanic upland between the Rhine and Belgium: round maar lakes fill old craters, Monschau and Bad Münstereifel are half-timbered towns inside their walls, and Burg Eltz stands in its forest valley exactly as it has for eight hundred years. The Eifelsteig crosses it on foot, the national park protects beech forest and wild cats, and nobody is ever far from a good bakery.
