Elba is an hour by ferry from Piombino and far more varied than its size suggests: granite coves and sandy bays, Monte Capanne rising above chestnut forest, mountain-bike trails and a long-distance hiking route across the island. Napoleon spent ten months of exile here; his villas stand above Portoferraio, whose Medici fortresses guard the harbour.
