Friesland is a land of lakes and canals with its own language, and the eleven towns of the legendary skating tour — Sneek, Hindeloopen, Harlingen and the others — are small, old and full of boats. Summer is for sailing, paddling and cycling between them; Leeuwarden is the capital, and the ferries to the Wadden islands leave from Harlingen.
