Where Italy, the Alps and the Slavic world meet — white wines, mosaics and a Habsburg port.
Friuli Venezia Giulia is three countries’ worth of culture in one small region. Trieste was Vienna’s seaport and still drinks its coffee that way, in cafés built for an empire. Aquileia has an early Christian mosaic floor of 760 square metres under its basilica, Cividale was the Lombards’ first capital, and the Julian Alps rise behind. The Collio hills on the Slovenian border make some of the best white wine in Italy, and the border runs through the vineyards.
