Winter sun on the Atlantic, hundreds of bird species and boat trips up the Gambia river.
The Gambia is Africa’s smallest mainland country and one of its easiest winter-sun destinations, with Atlantic beaches around Kololi and Kotu. It is also a birdwatchers’ country — more than five hundred species live in a strip of land along one river — and the river is the way inland: boats go from the bush camp of Tendaba into the mangroves, where crocodiles, monkeys and kingfishers are everywhere.
