Europe’s grand canyon: turquoise water, limestone walls for climbers and lavender on the plateau.
The Verdon has cut a gorge seven hundred metres deep into the Provençal limestone, and its turquoise water ends in the Lac de Sainte-Croix, where you hire a kayak or a paddleboard and float into the canyon. The walls are one of Europe’s great climbing areas, the Sentier Blanc-Martel hikes the bottom, and the Valensole plateau above turns purple with lavender in July.
