A walled Hanseatic town, limestone sea stacks and Sweden’s best summer light.
Gotland sits far enough out in the Baltic to have its own weather, its own sheep and more hours of sun than anywhere else in Sweden. Visby is ringed by a 3.4-kilometre medieval wall with church ruins standing roofless inside it, and in early August the whole town plays at being medieval for a week. The coast has raukar, limestone stacks left standing by the sea, thickest on Fårö, where Ingmar Bergman lived and filmed. Bicycles are the sensible way around.
