Steam trains to a summit of witches, half-timbered towns and a thousand years of mining.
The Harz is the northernmost mountain range in Germany and catches enough weather to feel far higher than 1,141 metres. A narrow-gauge steam railway still climbs the Brocken, where Goethe put the witches’ sabbath in Faust and the GDR put a listening station. Below it, Goslar and Quedlinburg are half-timbered towns listed by UNESCO, and the Rammelsberg mine worked the same ore for over a thousand years. The spruce forest is visibly dying, and the park is letting it, on purpose.
