Dry karst country of turquoise rivers, Ottoman bridges and stone villages, an hour from the Adriatic.

The southern half of Bosnia is hotter, barer and older-looking than the north: Mostar’s rebuilt bridge over the green Neretva, the dervish house at the spring in Blagaj, the walled hill town of Počitelj, and the Kravica falls where the Trebižat spreads out over limestone. Distances are short and the roads are good, which makes driving the natural way to see it, and the Žilavka and Blatina wines are worth stopping for. Summer is genuinely hot.
