Apricot terraces under seven-thousanders, on the old road to China.
The Hunza valley runs between peaks well over 7,000 metres, with Rakaposhi rising 6,000 metres straight out of it — one of the greatest unbroken slopes on earth. Terraced apricot and cherry orchards turn the valley floor white in April and gold in October. Baltit and Altit forts have watched the road for six centuries, and that road is the Karakoram Highway, the highest paved border crossing in the world. Attabad Lake, turquoise and forty metres deep, was made by a landslide in 2010.
