A self-governing island of moors, steam railways and the most dangerous road race in the world.
The Isle of Man is its own country in most respects that matter, with a parliament that claims to be the oldest in continuous existence. Victorian transport survives in working order — steam trains to Port Erin, an electric railway to Laxey and its enormous waterwheel, horse trams along Douglas promenade — and the interior is empty moorland walked by the Raad ny Foillan coastal path. For two weeks each spring the TT closes the mountain road and the island fills; the rest of the year it is remarkably quiet.
