White sand and turquoise water off Cornwall, subtropical gardens and boats between the islands.
Forty kilometres off Land’s End, the Isles of Scilly have beaches that look Caribbean on a sunny day. Five islands are inhabited; boats leave Hugh Town on St Mary’s every morning for the others, among them Tresco with its subtropical Abbey Garden. There are seals and puffins, almost no cars and a pace that suits walking, paddling and very little else.
