A Channel Island closer to France than to Britain, with huge tides, sandy bays and an occupation history.
Jersey has some of the largest tides in the world: the sea retreats over a kilometre at St Ouen and Grouville, doubling the size of the island twice a day and opening a walk out to Seymour Tower. St Helier is the working centre, the north coast is cliff path above small bays, and the German occupation of 1940 to 1945 is documented unflinchingly in the Jersey War Tunnels. It is warm for the latitude, the cows are famous, and the seafood is the reason to eat out.
