Red-stone Jesuit mission ruins in the forest, a river beach and carnival on the Paraná.
In the far south of Paraguay, the Jesuits built mission towns for the Guaraní in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the red sandstone ruins of Trinidad and Jesús de Tavarangüe are a UNESCO site, with a night-time light show at Trinidad. Encarnación, across the Paraná from Argentina, has a long river beach and the country’s liveliest carnival.
