Europe’s youngest country: Ottoman towns, medieval monasteries and empty mountains, at the lowest prices on the continent.
Prizren is the reason most people come — a river running through an Ottoman centre beneath a hilltop fortress — and Peja adds the Rugova gorge and the Patriarchate, a thirteenth-century monastery still in use. Behind them stand the Accursed Mountains, where the Peaks of the Balkans trail crosses into Albania and Montenegro. Half the population is under thirty, coffee culture is taken seriously, and almost nothing costs what you expect.
