The Kvarner Gulf is the part of the Adriatic closest to Central Europe. Opatija was the Habsburgs’ winter resort and keeps its villas and seafront promenade; Krk, joined to the mainland by a bridge, has a walled old town, pebble coves and its own white wine, and ferries go on to Cres and Rab.
