A laurel forest in the clouds, terraced valleys and a language that is whistled.
La Gomera is round, steep and almost roadless in the middle, where Garajonay keeps a laurel forest that has been there since before the Ice Age, permanently wet from the trade winds. Ravines run from it to the sea, terraced by hand and ending in black beaches at Valle Gran Rey and Hermigua. Silbo Gomero, the whistled language used to talk across the ravines, is taught in schools again. Everything arrives by ferry, which is exactly why the island stays quiet.
