The north shore of Lake Geneva is a string of towns under vineyard terraces — the Lavaux terraces between Lausanne and Montreux are a UNESCO site — with paddle steamers linking them. Chillon castle stands in the water at Montreux; an hour inland, the walled village of Gruyères gives its name to the cheese and serves it with double cream.
