A freshwater sea of colourful cichlids for snorkelling and kayaking, and elephants on the Shire river.
Lake Malawi is so big it has beaches and waves, and its clear water holds hundreds of species of brightly coloured cichlid fish that live nowhere else — the lake is a UNESCO site at Cape Maclear, where you snorkel, kayak to islands and sleep in beach lodges. Senga Bay is the nearest shore to the capital, and Liwonde national park on the Shire river has elephants, hippos and rhinos seen by boat.
