White dunes filled with rainwater lagoons — a desert that is only swimmable half the year.
Lençóis Maranhenses is 1,500 square kilometres of white dunes that receive far too much rain to be a desert. Between June and September the hollows fill with clear blue and green rainwater, thousands of lagoons warm enough to swim in, and fish arrive in them by routes nobody fully agrees on. By December most have dried. There are no roads in: access is on foot from Barreirinhas or Atins, or by four-wheel drive across the sand at low tide.
