Where the rainforest meets the beach: forest elephants on the sand, lowland gorillas and whales offshore.

Loango is one of the few places on earth where rainforest runs down to an empty ocean beach, and forest elephants, buffalo and even hippos walk out onto the sand. Lagoon boat trips and forest walks look for western lowland gorillas and chimpanzees, and from July to September humpback whales pass close to the shore. There are only a handful of lodges, reached by boat or small plane.
