A fortress capital above two gorges, with sandstone hiking country and a Moselle wine road within half an hour.

Luxembourg City is built on a ravine: the Bock casemates tunnel through the rock, and the Grund lies far below the ramparts of the Chemin de la Corniche. Beyond it the country is small enough to cross in an hour — the Mullerthal, called Little Switzerland for its mossy sandstone clefts, the castle at Vianden, and the terraced Moselle bank where Luxembourg makes very good Riesling and Crémant. It is expensive, and it is also one of the easiest places in Europe to travel: all public transport is free.
