A rubber-boom opera house, the Meeting of the Waters and jungle lodges on the Rio Negro.

Manaus grew rich on rubber in the middle of the rainforest and built itself an opera house with tiles from Alsace and marble from Italy. Boats go out to the Meeting of the Waters, where the black Rio Negro and the sandy Solimões run side by side without mixing, and up the Rio Negro to lodges near Novo Airão, where pink river dolphins, caimans and the flooded forest of the Anavilhanas archipelago wait.
