Carved wooden gates, tall shingled churches and a cemetery that jokes about the dead.
Maramureș kept a wooden architecture that vanished elsewhere: gates carved with rope and sun motifs, and churches with shingled spires so tall they look drawn out — eight are World Heritage. Săpânța has the Merry Cemetery, where every grave carries a painted portrait and a rhyme about how the person lived and died, often rudely. A steam-hauled forestry railway still runs up the Vaser valley, and haymaking is done with scythes because the slopes allow nothing else.
