Egypt’s southern Red Sea: untouched reefs, dugongs, dolphins and an old Ottoman port.
The southern Red Sea coast around Marsa Alam has some of its healthiest reefs, and the dives and snorkels are why people come: dugongs graze the sea grass at Abu Dabbab, spinner dolphins rest in the lagoon of Samadai, and the offshore reefs have sharks. El Quseir, further north, is an old pilgrims’ port with an Ottoman fort and a quieter pace than the resorts.
