Two thousand lakes joined by channels, with a canal that hauls boats overland.

Masuria is lake country on a scale that takes a week by boat: the Great Masurian Lakes are linked by canals, and sailing them is a national tradition rather than a tourist product. The Elbląg Canal solves a 100-metre difference in level by lifting boats onto rail cradles and pulling them across grass, which has worked since 1860. Wolf’s Lair, Hitler’s eastern headquarters, lies in the forest near Kętrzyn as blown-up concrete, and storks nest on half the village roofs.
